Sub: Course Profile
Brief details of Pre/Post Sea Training program conducted by Institute of International Maritime Studies(IIMS), in Collaboration with Institute of Maritime Education and Training Australia (iMETA) / Hunter TAFE NSW, approved by Australian Maritime Safety Authority(AMSA), is as follows:
Phase I:
This is a shore based Pre-Sea training phase at IIMS Kochi, for candidates who have a minimum educational qualification of 10+2 or 10+3(Diploma in any stream) or Graduate, with age not exceeding 25 years – Duration will be 3 months. Upon successful completion of this phase, the students will be awarded with Certificate in Shipping and Transport and be eligible for Phase II.
Phase II:
This is a shipboard practical training phase including an AMSA approved Distance Learning Program (DLP) provided by Institute of Maritime Education and Training Australia (iMETA)
-Duration will be 18 Months. During this period candidates are eligible for a stipend of E 10,000/- to E 20000/- (200$ to 400$), which will be directly paid by the employer.
18 month ship attached sea service is assured by IIMS.
Phase III:
This will be a shore based training phase conducted at New South Wales, by Hunter TAFE University, Australia – 6 Months duration. Upon completion of the course the candidates will be awarded a Diploma in Transport and Distribution. Further, for obtaining Class III Deck Officer’s License (Equivalent to 2nd Mate F.G License issued by DG Shipping, GOI), they will have to appear for an Oral Examination before the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Students will also be given work permit as per Australian Govt norms (up to 20 hrs/week) during the Phase III studies at New South Wales.
Upon successful completion of all the above stages, candidates can seek employment as deck officer onboard any merchant ships around the world and have a potential of earning around USD $3000/- (INR 150,000/-) per month as per the current market situation. If the candidate is pursuing further studies and examinations for higher levels, he/she have the prospect of rising to the rank of Captain who draw wages of up to USD $16000/- (INR 800,000/-) per month which could be even more in future.
